Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about converting images between JPEG and PNG formats.
Is this image converter free?
Yes, the converter is completely free to use with no limits on the number of conversions. There are no hidden fees, subscriptions, or watermarks.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. All conversion happens directly in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device. We have no access to the files you convert, making this tool safe for sensitive or confidential images.
What is the difference between JPEG and PNG?
JPEG uses lossy compression, resulting in smaller files but some quality loss with each save. It is best suited for photographs and complex images.
PNG uses lossless compression, preserving full image quality and supporting transparency. It is better for graphics, logos, screenshots, and images containing text or sharp edges.
Will converting JPEG to PNG improve image quality?
No. Converting from JPEG to PNG preserves the current quality but cannot restore detail that was lost during the original JPEG compression. However, the PNG version will not lose any further quality when you edit and save it again, since PNG uses lossless compression.
Does converting JPEG to PNG add transparency?
No. JPEG does not contain any transparency data, so converting to PNG will not create transparent areas. The resulting PNG will look identical to the original JPEG. To add transparency, you would need to edit the image in a graphics editor after conversion.
What happens to transparency when converting PNG to JPEG?
Transparent areas in a PNG are filled with a white background when converted to JPEG, since the JPEG format does not support transparency. If you need to keep transparency, stay with the PNG format.
What is the maximum file size I can convert?
The maximum file size is 10 MB. Since all processing happens in your browser, very large images may take longer to convert depending on your device's processing power and available memory.
What JPEG quality setting is used?
When converting to JPEG, we use a quality setting of 92%, which provides an excellent balance between file size and visual quality. This is high enough that compression artifacts are minimal for most images.
Can I convert multiple images at once?
Currently the tool supports converting one image at a time. Drop or select a file, download the result, and then convert the next image.
What browsers are supported?
Any modern browser that supports the HTML5 Canvas API works with this tool, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and most mobile browsers. No plugins or extensions are required.
Does the converter work offline?
The page needs to be loaded initially over the internet, but once loaded, the conversion itself does not require an internet connection since all processing happens locally in your browser.
Why is my PNG file larger than the original JPEG?
This is expected. PNG uses lossless compression, which preserves every pixel exactly as-is. JPEG achieves smaller file sizes by discarding some image data. For photographs, PNG files will almost always be larger than their JPEG equivalents.
